The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Secretariat in Bangkok hosted a virtual event to celebrate the 3rd Asia Pacific Day of the Ocean
On 29 October, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Secretariat in Bangkok hosted a virtual event to celebrate the 3rd Asia Pacific Day of the Ocean. During the event,
H.E. Mr Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr, President of the Republic of Palau, applauded the work of the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership, of which UNSW is a Founding Member and host of the secretariat.
UNSW-GWI hosted the launch of the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership in 2019. The GOAP brings together a diverse range of stakeholders with a common interest to ensure that the values and benefits of oceans are recognised and accounted for in decision-making about social and economic development.
During the 3rd Asia Pacific Day of the Ocean, H.E. Mr Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. said, "I want to commend ESCAP’s leadership in advancing the global partnership for ocean accounting. Setting a course for a sustainable ocean economy depends on making decisions with all of the ocean economy in sight. It depends on being able to take proper account of the natural capital of our ocean, and how this supports livelihoods and welfare – not just GDP. But ocean accounting is also where partnerships to share best practices are key – because many of the ocean states of our region are also ones with limited statistical capacity."
During the virtual event one interactive dialogue focused specifically on ocean accounts, data and statistics, with the goal of helping to develop a consolidated regional perspective. The other three dialogues were on fostering tourism and fisheries for sustainable development; sustainable maritime connectivity; and solutions for land-based marine pollution.
