The Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP), with the Secretariat hosted at UNSW Sydney, is supporting the growing momentum globally to better measure and value the ocean’s contribution to society and the economy, going ‘Beyond GDP’. The GOAP is recognised as an action coalition by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and directly collaborating local partners on ocean accounting activities in over 10 countries.

More recently, the GOAP convened the 3rd Global Dialogue on Ocean Accounting, with ministerial representation from the United Kingdom and Republic of Indonesia. Over 400 individuals registered from over 65 countries.

Ongoing projects include:

  • Supporting Australia’s partnership with India in the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative, through DFAT’s AIIPOIP, in strengthening links between the Communities of Practice within both countries. The 1-year project has hosted a regional dialogue in SE Asia, with another planned soon. The work is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, funded at A$100k.
  • Partnering with the UN Environmental Program (Environmental statistics division) in supporting indicator development of marine environmental Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14) by developing methods to better measure plastic waste into the environment.
